CHART Competition 2019

By exploring the potential of the immaterial, “The Pink Elephant” aims to reveal the hidden aesthetic value of the utilitarian materials such as waterproofing membranes and insulation. Stripping the architecture of everything that gives it its materiality, the structure seeks to expose the quality of those materials, which are often disguised underneath the traditional finishes.

Despite their inherently artificial and industrial character, each material displays a unique atmospheric quality – the reflectivity of the water membrane and underfloor insulation, the acoustic properties and soft texture of the acoustic foam, the warmth of the pink neon light. Furthermore, each material is lightweight, allowing for structural flexibility and efficiency. According to their properties, the materials form two distinct but intersecting volumes – a volume of light that attracts and locates, and a volume of silver that encloses and protects.
